10 Month Old Sleep Schedule: Naps, Bedtime & Wake Windows
Optimal sleep schedule for your 10 month old. Total sleep hours, nap timing, wake windows, and bedtime routine. Includes sample schedules.
๐ How Much Sleep Does a 10-Month-Old Need?
At 10 months, your baby needs about 13 to 14 hours of total sleep per day. Sleep should be well-consolidated by now โ a solid 2-nap schedule during the day and 10 to 12 hours of uninterrupted (or nearly uninterrupted) nighttime sleep. If your baby is still waking frequently at night, it's worth evaluating the daytime schedule, as the root cause is often a nap or wake window issue.
- Total sleep in 24 hours: 13โ14 hours
- Nighttime sleep: 10โ12 hours (most 10-month-olds can go all night without feeds)
- Daytime sleep: 2โ3 hours across 2 naps
- Morning nap: 1โ1.5 hours (typically the more restorative nap)
- Afternoon nap: 1โ1.5 hours
๐ Wake Windows at 10 Months
At 10 months, wake windows generally range from 3 to 3.5 hours, with the day following an ascending pattern โ the first wake window is the shortest and the last one before bed is the longest. Fine-tuning these windows by even 15 minutes can make the difference between a smooth bedtime and a 45-minute battle.
- Wake window 1 (wake to nap 1): 3โ3.25 hours
- Wake window 2 (nap 1 to nap 2): 3โ3.25 hours
- Wake window 3 (nap 2 to bedtime): 3.25โ3.5 hours
- If your baby takes longer than 15โ20 minutes to fall asleep, the wake window is likely too short โ try adding 15 minutes
- If your baby is fussy and crying hard at the crib, the wake window may be too long โ try subtracting 15 minutes
โจ Sample 10-Month-Old Daily Schedule
Here's a realistic schedule for a 10-month-old on 2 naps. This assumes a 7:00 AM wake time โ adjust all times forward or back depending on when your baby naturally wakes.
- 7:00 AM โ Wake up, milk feed, breakfast (soft scrambled eggs, oatmeal with fruit, toast strips)
- 10:00 AM โ Nap 1 begins (1โ1.5 hours)
- 11:15 AM โ Wake from nap 1, milk feed, playtime
- 12:00 PM โ Lunch (soft solids: pasta, steamed veggies, cheese, fruit)
- 2:15โ2:30 PM โ Nap 2 begins (1โ1.5 hours)
- 3:30 PM โ Wake from nap 2, milk feed, outdoor play or activity time
- 5:15 PM โ Dinner (soft solids)
- 6:30 PM โ Begin bedtime routine: bath, lotion, pajamas, book, milk feed, lullaby
- 7:00 PM โ In crib, asleep for the night
๐ Solving Early Morning Waking
If your 10-month-old is consistently waking before 6:00 AM, the solution usually lies in the daytime schedule rather than at night itself. Early morning waking is one of the trickiest sleep problems to solve because there are several possible causes, and you often need to adjust multiple things.
- Check the room environment: complete darkness (use blackout curtains), white noise running all night, and a comfortable room temperature (68โ72ยฐF / 20โ22ยฐC)
- Push bedtime later by 15โ30 minutes โ an overly early bedtime (before 6:30 PM) can cause early waking
- Make sure the last wake window is long enough (at least 3.25 hours) โ undertiredness at bedtime often shows up as early morning waking
- Cap total daytime sleep at 2.5โ3 hours โ too much daytime sleep steals from nighttime
- Don't start the day before 6:00 AM โ keep the room dark and boring until your desired wake time, even if baby is fussing
- Give it 1โ2 weeks of consistent changes before deciding if an adjustment is working
๐๏ธ Standing in the Crib and Sleep Regressions
At 10 months, your baby may be dealing with the tail end of the 8โ10 month regression or experiencing disruptions from new motor milestones like cruising, standing unassisted, or even early steps. The most frustrating symptom is often the "standing in the crib" phase โ your baby pulls to stand and then cries because they can't (or won't) sit back down.
- Practice pulling up and sitting down during playtime โ use a couch, low table, or play gym and encourage your baby to lower themselves over and over
- At bedtime, lay your baby down calmly 1โ2 times, then allow them space to work it out
- Avoid hovering over the crib repeatedly laying them down โ this often becomes a game
- Ensure the crib mattress is at the lowest setting now that your baby can pull to stand
- Remove any bumpers, toys, or blankets from the crib that could be used as a step
- This phase typically resolves in 1โ2 weeks once the motor skill becomes routine and "boring"
๐ฎ Looking Ahead: 11โ12 Months
Between 10 and 12 months, your baby's sleep needs stay relatively stable. Wake windows will stretch slightly, and you may notice your baby pushing the afternoon nap a bit later. The 12-month regression โ driven by walking, first words, and increased independence โ may be on the horizon.
- Wake windows will stretch to 3.25โ3.75 hours by 11โ12 months
- Both naps should remain at roughly 1โ1.5 hours; if one nap consistently runs short, try extending the preceding wake window
- Around 12 months, the AAP considers it safe to introduce a small lovey or comfort object in the crib
- Don't rush the 2-to-1 nap transition โ most babies aren't ready until 13โ15 months at the earliest
- Bedtime may naturally shift slightly later as wake windows grow, but aim to keep it between 7:00 and 8:00 PM
