6-Month-Old Nap Schedule: The 3-to-2 Nap Transition Guide
Most 6-month-olds take 2-3 naps. The third nap becomes a catnap before dropping. Signs they're ready for 2 naps and how to make the switch.
๐ด The 6-Month Nap Structure: 3 Naps Per Day
At 6 months, most babies settle into a 3-nap pattern: a morning nap, a longer afternoon nap, and a short late-afternoon catnap. Wake windows have stretched to 2 to 2.5 hours, and total daytime sleep should land around 3 to 3.5 hours. This is often the most predictable nap stage parents have experienced so far โ naps are finally starting to consolidate into longer, more reliable stretches.
- Number of naps: 3 (morning nap, afternoon nap, late catnap)
- Wake windows: 2 to 2.5 hours โ shortest in the morning, longest before bed
- Morning nap: Usually 1 to 1.5 hours, starting about 2 hours after wake-up
- Afternoon nap: The longest nap โ 1 to 2 hours โ and the most restorative
- Catnap: A short 20-to-30-minute nap that bridges the gap to bedtime
- Total daytime sleep: 3 to 3.5 hours โ cap at 3.5 to protect nighttime sleep
๐ Sample 6-Month-Old Nap Schedule (3 Naps)
This schedule assumes a 7:00 AM wake-up. Shift all times based on your baby's natural wake time. Focus on the wake windows rather than exact clock times.
- 7:00 AM โ Wake up and feed
- 9:00 AM โ Nap 1 (1โ1.5 hours) โ 2 hr wake window
- 10:15 AM โ Wake and feed
- 12:30 PM โ Nap 2 (1โ2 hours) โ 2.25 hr wake window
- 2:00 PM โ Wake and feed
- 4:15 PM โ Nap 3 / catnap (20โ30 min) โ 2.25 hr wake window
- 4:45 PM โ Wake
- 6:45 PM โ Begin bedtime routine โ 2โ2.5 hr wake window
- 7:15 PM โ Bedtime
๐ When to Drop the Third Nap
The third catnap doesn't disappear overnight โ it's a gradual transition that usually happens between 6 and 8 months. Don't rush it. Here are the signs your baby is ready, and what to do when they are.
- Fights the catnap consistently โ if they refuse it or take 20+ minutes to fall asleep for 1 to 2 weeks straight, not just a few days
- Bedtime is pushing too late โ the catnap ends at 5 PM but baby still won't sleep until 8:30 PM, meaning too much total day sleep
- The first two naps have lengthened โ if morning and afternoon naps are both 1.5+ hours, they may be getting enough day sleep in 2 naps
- Nighttime sleep is disrupted โ too much daytime sleep causes night wakings or early morning wake-ups (before 6 AM)
- How to drop it: Offer the catnap every other day for a week, then move bedtime 30 minutes earlier to compensate. An earlier bedtime of 6:00 to 6:30 PM is normal during this transition.
๐๏ธ Crib Naps vs. Contact Naps
Many parents of 6-month-olds find themselves โnap trappedโ โ stuck holding a sleeping baby for every nap because the baby won't sleep anywhere else. Contact naps aren't harmful, but if you want to transition to crib naps, 6 months is a great time to do it.
- Start with the first nap of the day: Morning sleep drive is highest, so your baby is most likely to accept the crib for this nap
- Optimize the sleep environment: Pitch-dark room (blackout curtains), white noise at 60โ65 decibels, cool temperature around 68โ72ยฐF
- Use a consistent pre-nap routine: A 5-minute routine โ sleep sack, close curtains, white noise on, brief cuddle, into crib โ signals it's time to sleep
- Give baby 10 to 15 minutes to settle: Fussing and light crying are normal as baby learns a new skill โ check and reassure at intervals if needed
- Keep one contact nap if you want: Many families successfully do crib naps for naps 1 and 2 and still do a contact or stroller catnap for nap 3
๐ฎ Looking Ahead: 7 to 9 Months
Over the next few months, your baby's nap schedule will continue to consolidate and simplify.
- Third nap drops between 6 and 8 months โ your baby moves to a solid 2-nap schedule
- Wake windows extend to 2.5 to 3.5 hours โ by 9 months, baby can handle longer stretches of awake time
- Naps lengthen and become predictable โ many babies settle into a morning nap at 9:00โ9:30 AM and an afternoon nap at 1:00โ2:00 PM
- 8-to-10-month regression โ separation anxiety, crawling, and pulling to stand can temporarily disrupt naps. Stay consistent with your schedule through it.
- Bedtime solidifies around 7:00 to 7:30 PM โ with 2 naps, nighttime sleep often improves significantly
