Fortnite Parental Controls: Cabined Accounts, Voice Chat, and V-Bucks
How Epic’s cabined accounts, chat limits, and payment controls actually work—and which purchases they do not stop.
What parents should know
- ✓ Use the child's real age. A Cabined Account is the default protection, not a punishment.
- ✓ Send parental consent to an email only the parent can open, then set a PIN that is not reused elsewhere.
- ✓ Under 10, Epic's maximum voice and text setting is Friends Only. Under 13, the maximum adds team members and connections.
- ✓ Epic payment limits do not cover PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, or V-Bucks already owned.
- ✓ Chat settings do not review every match or Creative island. Practice leave, block, report, and tell an adult.
Start with the age on the account
Fortnite parental controls depend on the birth date entered for the Epic account. If that date says the player is under 13, or under the local age of digital consent when that age is higher, Epic makes the account a Cabined Account and asks for a parent or guardian email.
Do not raise the birth date to unlock chat. While the account is waiting for consent, Epic says the player can still play Fortnite, Rocket League, or Fall Guys and use content already purchased or earned. Voice chat, free text chat, purchases with money, custom display names, SMS-based two-factor authentication, and Sign in with Epic for some outside services stay unavailable.
Give consent from an inbox the child cannot open
Epic emails the address the child provides. The parent page describes a message along the lines of the child creating an Epic account, with a way to allow chat, real-money purchases, or access to a game Epic does not own. The child can also ask Epic to resend the request from the account portal.
In Fortnite, setup asks the parent to confirm that email and create a 6-digit Parental Controls PIN. Pick a PIN the child does not use for a phone or tablet. The parent email should be one the child cannot reset. Adult verification methods depend on country and can include a card or other checks Epic lists for that region. Finish verification yourself. Do not hand the child the card or the parent inbox.
What stays limited after you opt in
Consent is not the same as turning every feature on. Epic publishes age ceilings for voice and text chat. Turning voice chat on also turns on voice reporting.
| Account age | Maximum voice and text chat | What this means at home |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 | Friends Only | Do not expect a setting that opens chat to the whole match. |
| Under 13 | Friends, team members, and connections | A teammate is not automatically a known classmate. Review the friends list. |
| 13 and older | Additional options can appear | Recheck the menu on the birthday instead of assuming the old limit remains. |
V-Bucks and the purchases Epic does not control
Epic says a Parental Controls PIN can be required for Epic payment, and Epic can apply a spending limit to Epic Games payments. Those controls do not apply to payments on PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or other platform stores. They also do not apply to purchases made with in-game currency such as V-Bucks.
Epic documents a separate choice about spending V-Bucks on paid random items. Read the sentence under that toggle. It is not a switch that freezes every V-Buck already in the account. For console and mobile play, set the platform's own purchase approval and remove stored payment methods where the store allows it. A V-Bucks card redeemed inside Fortnite is another path that platform-store limits may not see.
What cabined accounts cannot watch for you
A chat limit does not review Creative islands, emotes, usernames, or what happens in a party on another app. Play one match together and ask which islands friends are joining. Agree that the child leaves a match that feels wrong, then uses block and report.
If someone asks for a password, a verification code, or a login to “receive free V-Bucks,” treat it as a scam. Epic staff do not need those codes. If a conversation turns sexual, threatening, or toward an offline meeting, stop it, save the username and date if that is safe, and report it. Do not ask the child to keep talking in order to collect more messages. Include Fortnite in a family media plan so bedtime and spending rules are not renegotiated every evening.
Frequently asked questions
Can my child play Fortnite before I give consent?
Yes. Epic says a Cabined Account can still play and use content already owned. Voice chat, free text chat, and purchases with money stay off until a parent gives permission.
How do I turn on Fortnite parental controls?
In Fortnite, choose the parent-email setup, confirm an email you control, and create a 6-digit PIN. Epic’s help page is the place to check if the button names have changed.
Can I turn Fortnite voice chat completely off?
Before consent, voice chat is unavailable. After consent, use the strictest voice and text option Epic offers for that age. Under 10, Epic’s published maximum is Friends Only.
Will Epic’s spending limit stop V-Bucks purchases?
No. Epic says its payment PIN and spending limit do not cover platform-store payments or spending in-game currency such as V-Bucks. Set the console or app-store controls as well.
What should change on a 13th birthday?
Epic says additional voice and text options can become available at 13. Open the parental controls on that day and decide what, if anything, to allow. Do not leave the review for the child to discover first.
