Water Bead Squishy Toy Recalls 2026: Mystery Buns and Dumplings
The 2026 CPSC recalls of squishy toys, mystery dumplings and squishy buns filled with water beads, what the new federal water bead standard requires, and what to do if a child swallows a bead.
What parents should know
- Four squishy/dumpling toy recalls in Sept–Oct 2026, all for oversized water beads inside.
- No incidents were reported in these four notices.
- The federal water bead rule (16 CFR 1250.4) took effect March 12, 2026.
- Swallowed beads can expand and block the intestines; children may look fine at first.
- Squishies split open with squeezing and chewing, so check toys for tears.
Why squishy toys are being recalled
Squishy "mystery buns" and "dumplings" are soft stress toys, popular with kids, that contain loose water beads under a thin skin. Water beads are superabsorbent polymer balls that can grow many times their dry size when wet. In all four 2026 notices, CPSC says the beads expand larger than the toy standard permits, posing a deadly ingestion hazard; ingested beads can cause choking and intestinal obstruction (see the linked notices).
CPSC says water beads can expand up to 100 times their original size, and that they have been linked to deaths and serious injuries in young children (CPSC).
What the 2026 federal water bead standard requires
The rule, codified at 16 CFR 1250.4, applies to toys that contain water beads and took effect March 12, 2026 (CPSC).
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Size limit after expansion | A water bead, after soaking per the test method, must pass through a 5.0 mm gauge, so it should not grow large enough to block a child's intestine. |
| Acrylamide limit | Beads are tested for acrylamide, a residual chemical, with a limit of 325 µg. |
| Warning labels | Toys with water beads must carry required warnings. |
| Scope | Toys and children's products containing water beads; recalls show some imported squishies still don't comply. |

- Had a problem with a product that isn't recalled? Report it at SaferProducts.gov.
Keeping water beads away from young children
Magnets and button batteries carry similar swallowing risks; see magnet safety for kids and button battery dangers.
- Avoid buying water beads or bead-filled squishies for homes with babies, toddlers or children who still mouth objects.
- Inspect squishies often. Throw away any with a tear, leak or seam split; loose beads are tiny and easy to miss.
- Check for dry beads that rolled under furniture or into vents; they can be mistaken for candy.
- Tell grandparents, sitters and classrooms about the recalls; party-favor squishies are common.
- Watch for symptoms if a bead is missing after play, and don't wait for symptoms to call Poison Control.
Why swallowed beads are hard to spot
Water beads are small and slippery, and a child who swallows one may not show symptoms at first while the bead keeps absorbing fluid. That's why CPSC urges parents to seek medical help right away if a child may have swallowed one (CPSC). Tell the care team the bead's size and color, and bring the toy or packaging if you can.
